EQC ahead of target for building assessments
12 Dec 2011
The Earthquake Commission is making such good progress on building assessments that it will reduce field staff early, EQC Customer Services General Manager Bruce Emson says.
“In September EQC set a goal of completing all 164,000 post-February full assessments of buildings in Canterbury by Christmas. Thanks to the massive work ethic of our field staff and the adoption of a suburb-by-suburb approach to assessments, we are set to finish the work ahead of schedule.
“Late last month the decision was made to bring forward the assessment of properties in the rest of the South Island, but even with this additional work there is not the capacity to justify 500 field staff through to the end of 2011.
“Accordingly, about 150 people will finish work a fortnight early, with seven days’ pay, in lieu of notice. This will save EQC a week in unpaid wages, and a fortnight’s allowances and accommodation, and allow those staff released early to take a well-earned Christmas break.
“The fact that the work has dropped is a tribute to the dedication of our frontline staff pulling together in pursuit of a common goal.
“It’s important to note that there are a few properties still to be assessed. Anyone who has not yet had a post-February assessment, or had a call from us to arrange one, should call us on 0800 DAMAGE to help us get your property assessed this year.”
