Initial locations established for earthquake repairs
Ian Simpson, Chief Executive of the Earthquake Commission (EQC), announced today that the major task of repairing the moderate or serious damage caused to more than 50,000 homes by the Canterbury earthquake would begin in earnest next week, with the first project management site office being established in Halswell Road, Halswell, in the south-west of Christchurch.
Offices would then be established in Rolleston and Kaiapoi once locations had been agreed with the local Council, Mr Simpson said. It is anticipated this will be in the week commencing 8 November.
The initial locations have been chosen as work can commence there on a significant number of homes that are not affected by land remediation issues and this allows Fletcher Construction, as the project manager, to establish a working relationship with all three Councils.Subsequent locations will be advised as further information is gathered and resources put in place.
As the repair project gets fully under way, site offices will be set up throughout the region, enabling all repair work to be managed locally, and therefore close to homeowners and communities.
The Chief Executive Infrastructure of Fletcher Building, Mark Binns, said on behalf of Fletcher Construction that next week would see the first visible activity and he was pleased with the response from local contractors who would undertake the work.He said that more than 600 contractors and trades people had made contact through the earthquake recovery website eqr.co.nz and the necessary accreditation process was under way.
"Whilst it was important for the work to get under way as quickly as possible, it is also vital that systems are set up to ensure that claims are dealt with efficiently and resources are managed effectively," Mr Binns said.He noted that Fletcher Construction and EQC representatives had attended a number of community meetings this week and the company was keen to ensure that communication with the community remains a key priority.
