EQC Update

26 November 2010

EQC has paid out $331 million so far for damage to residential property from the Canterbury earthquake, up from $259 million a week ago.

"Individual claims received as of today total 129,112 up from 121,426 a week ago. Many of these claims separate into building, contents and land claims. These separate claims now total 159,628 and so far we have now paid out on a total of 38,650 claims. These can be broken down to 22,532 building claims (up from 17,453 a week ago), 16,111 contents claims (up from 12,432 a week ago) and seven minor land claims payments," explains Ian Simpson, Chief Executive of the Earthquake Commission.

"The assessment teams are working in earnest to get to properties as quickly as possible - currently managing to visit around 1,000 properties per day.

"We continue to close around 500 hundred claims per day and the majority of properties with the most serious damage have now been assessed and we are now working through the region, suburb-by-suburb and town-by-town.

"Claims continue to come in from Canterbury and farther afield. We are still receiving around 1,000 new claims per day and I would like to urge people who have yet to lodge their claim to do so before the Saturday 4 December deadline by phoning 0800 326 243  (international call +64 4 978 6400 or +64 4 978 6401) or through our website www.eqc.govt.nz .

"Christchurch has easily the most claims at 101,552, followed by Selwyn with 9,969, Waimakariri with 8,932, Timaru with 3,253, and Ashburton with 2,744. What many people may not realise is that there have been quite a few claims from further afield as well. These include Hurunui (657), Dunedin (453), Waitaki (253), Waimate (174), Grey (126), Queenstown-Lakes (121), Mackenzie (118), Central Otago (71), Wellington City (47), Marlborough (43), Kaikoura (42), Westland (41), Nelson (34), Southland District (25), Buller (23), Clutha (23), Invercargill (23), Lower Hutt (21), Tasman (17), Gore (15) and other*² (72)," Mr Simpson concluded.
