EQC welcomes start of repair roll-out in Canterbury

"The first permanent repairs of residential homes in Canterbury begins today and will give assurance to the tens of thousands of people with homes damaged by the 4 September earthquake," the chief executive of the Earthquake Commission, Ian Simpson, said today.

"The start of the complete repair of the first house in the first suburb in which our project manager, Fletcher Construction, has established a site office is highly significant, although there have been thousands of emergency and temporary repairs undertaken to date.

"Today we are seeing the beginning of the process whereby properties are methodically restored to their pre-earthquake condition.

"The establishment of our project management office by Fletcher Construction is to ensure that the repair work for the around 60,000 homes with moderate to serious damage is carried out as quickly and as efficiently as possible.

"Particular care is being given to the issues of quality, cost and momentum.

"Fletcher Construction has done a remarkable job in sorting through a wide range of information, setting priorities and gathering resources, for what will be a long and complex process. It was imperative that we got ourselves into a position where we can start the process confident that we have the structure, systems and people, to ensure the best possible outcome."
