Update from EQC
14 January 2011
EQC has now received 6,895 claims from the 4.9 magnitude Boxing Day earthquake, easily surpassing those from the previous two big aftershocks and now representing a sizeable event in its own right.
“To put it into perspective, it exceeds the 6,200 claims we received from the last significant earthquake we covered before Canterbury - the Gisborne event of December 2007,”the chief executive of the Earthquake Commission, Ian Simpson, said today.
“Total number of claims received to date is 168,731, which are made up of 231,025 part-claims for buildings, contents and land.
“Meanwhile, our Brisbane claims management office has re-opened after being closed because of the flooding in Queensland.
“This was affecting our ability to handle claims enquiries. However, I am pleased to say that the office is now close to fully operational again. A small number of staff are unable to get to the office but are able to operate remotely.
“The total paid out on claims to date now stands at $615 million, which is about 20 per cent of what we expect to pay out in total.
“As of today, we have settled 30,125 claims, completed assessments for a further 25,317 and begun assessments for another 25,805. This total of 81,247 is 5,818 assessments up on this time last week. This is 48 per cent of all claims received, and likely to be a higher proportion of actual single, valid claims.”
