EQC Visits Homeowners Worst-Affected by Land Damage

20 October 2010

An EQC loss adjuster and a Tonkin & Taylor geotechnical engineer have visited the 16 Canterbury homeowners whose damaged land will need further investigations to decide whether or not it can be repaired.

EQC's chief executive, Ian Simpson, said that the investigative work will be undertaken over the next few months. "As was shown by yesterday's aftershock the land is still moving and final decisions can't be made until the land has settled," he said.

EQC has also made calls to those 1,200 claimants whose land was badly affected but can be repaired. These claimants are being posted an information pack which includes the Tonkin & Taylor geotechnical report on the land damage to Canterbury.

The Commission will be working with local councils, insurance companies and the Government on a remediation plan for these properties and the wider suburbs affected by land damage.

"It will take some months for this collaborative process to deliver the best outcome for the people and communities affected."

"Every effort is being made to ensure they can rebuild with confidence. Given the stress of the situation we are very grateful for the patience people have shown," he said.
