Earthquake Commission sets up base in Whakatane
Earthquake Commission sets up base in Whakatane
Loss adjusters, estimators and claims administrators are being brought into Whakatane from around New Zealand to ensure Earthquake Commission (EQC) claims are settled as quickly as possible.
The heavy rain that has inundated many parts of the country in recent weeks has generated 130 Earthquake Commission claims in the Whakatane district alone. The claims are for landslip damage to homes and landslip or flood damage to residential land. In total, throughout New Zealand, EQC has received 355 landslip and flood damage claims since mid-May.
Holders of current home and/or contents insurance automatically have EQC's cover.
EQC's insurance manager, Lance Dixon, says people who have damage that could be a claim should ring EQC on 0800 326 243. "EQC's cover includes assistance with the cost of cleaning silt from properties," he says.
EQC will assist with the removal of silt from:
- Under dwellings,
- An 8m radius around dwellings and accessory buildings,
- The main accessway into dwellings (for a distance of 60m).
"The Commission's cover also applies to holiday homes as well as to permanent homes," Lance Dixon says. "The Earthquake Commission Act allows people up to three months to make a claim. This gives holiday home owners, who could go for a while without visiting their property, time to check for damage," he says.
