Time Varying Hazards Research
The Earthquake Commission (EQC) actively promotes and encourages research and education about matters relevant to natural disaster damage and ways of reducing, or preventing it.
The Commission is offering limited new funding to encourage greater continuity of effort in New Zealand on time variable aspects of earthquake and volcanic hazards research and to facilitate improvements to hazard models and forecast model testing. New streams of high quality data globally are stimulating research in these areas and New Zealand is well positioned to play a leading role in future developments.
Time-varying hazard models take into account fluctuations in the timing and scale of hazards and aim to provide better information about likely events on time-scales of years to decades. Reinsurers and underwriters are beginning to take account of fluctuations in seismic hazard with time, and emergency managers in New Zealand are beginning to appreciate that levels of hazard are neither established with certainty nor static.
Applications for grants are invited from researchers with a proven track-record in the physics-based modelling and statistical treatment of multi-decadal earthquake and volcanic hazard models and forecast model testing.
Application forms, guidelines and a timetable are available on the EQC website (www.eqc.govt.nz) or on request, either by writing, facsimile, telephone or e-mail. Applicants are required to state the objectives of the proposed project, give an estimate of cost, and set out the perceived benefits and relevance of the research.
The closing date for applications is 12 October 2007. Application inquiries should be addressed to:
