Controlled Blasting Programme

A controlled blasting programme ran as part of the ground improvement trials.

For the first phase of the trials, we have been using a specially designed truck (the T-Rex) to create vibrations in the ground and to simulate earthquakes of varying size.
The last part of the trials will involve some controlled blasting using a small underground charge to simulate earthquakes larger than we could simulate with the truck.

We greatly appreciate the patience of the local community where the controlled blasting took place. The controlled blasting programme has been very successful from a scientific point of view and it is helping greatly by giving us confidence in the methods we are trialling to improve residential land that is vulnerable to liquefaction in Canterbury.
