EQC and Te Papa

EQC is a founding partner of the Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa.

  • Since 2008 we’ve sponsored the Awesome Forces and Quake Braker exhibitions.
  • We also sponsor the Awesome Forces book; Awesome Forces education programme; and events, lectures and workshops.

Awesome Forces

Awesome Forces is one of Te Papa's most popular long-term exhibitions. It's co-sponsored by EQC and GNS Science.

Awesome Forces shows how plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and erosion have shaped our landscape – and the lives of the people who live here.

  • More than 13.5 million people have experienced Awesome Forces since it opened in 1998 (as at December 2014).

Awesome Forces education programme

Awesome Forces has seen a massive 58% conversion rate of all those who have visited the museum: a total of 23,181,725 visitors since opening.

5001 students have taken part in the Awesome Forces Student programme since 2006.

Quake Braker

Quake Braker is an underground space that displays some of the 135 base isolators that Te Papa sits on.

  • These isolators reduce the severity of shaking in the event of a major earthquake.
  • They’re the invention of New Zealand scientist Dr William Robinson (University of Waikato website) and are now in use in buildings around the world.

More than 1,767,229 people have visited Quake Braker up to December 2014.
