EQC welcomes Public Inquiry into the Earthquake Commission

Hon. Dr Megan Woods has today announced a Public Inquiry into the Earthquake Commission.

EQC Board Chair Sir Michael Cullen says that the Inquiry will ensure that lessons from the Canterbury earthquakes and subsequent events are captured, and that EQC has the appropriate policies and operating structures in place to improve claims management experiences in the future.

“EQC will work with the Inquiry in an open and positive manner.

“The Inquiry is an opportunity for an independent examination of EQC’s approach to the Canterbury earthquakes and the events that followed.

“EQC has spent a lot of time examining and identifying lessons from its response to the Canterbury earthquakes and subsequent events because natural disasters will occur in the future. We continue to make changes that are delivering better customer service and outcomes for Cantabrians and this work is continuing.

“We remain focused on working with our customers in Canterbury to resolve the remaining claims, and this work will carry on in parallel with the Inquiry and other initiatives put in place since the release of the report from the Independent Ministerial Advisor (IMA)”, says Sir Michael.
